Light: Les Fleurs

I think that this photo attempts to break from the traditional image of flowers and their beauty in nature.  There is a mysterious effect of movement and questions surrounding the colors apparent in the sky as a result of the little light present and the dense moisture in the air at the time.

Light: Night

This image portrays a typical street on Long Island yet the lighting and the movement that the camera has captured as a result of the rain creates a different kind of emotion.  This eerie feeling is definitely delineated through the light that comes from the street lamp, which is the only source of light in this photo.  There is a sense of movement as well in this image that is supposed to represent a stoic image of the silence and stillness that night brings on a suburban street.

Abstraction: Fences

Abstraction: Large and in Charge

I think that this photo attempts to represent abstraction in that the shapes that are supposed to represent the monotony of bike racks are distorted thus, in my eyes, creating a whole new image.  The expected illusion is distorted as the supposed structured lines are bent to reveal deficiencies that are only repeated in the contrasting shadows.

Welcome to my very first blog...get excited.  Just kidding (half).  My name is Julie Rapinat and I am a senior at Adelphi University.  Although I am an English major/French minor hoping to one day be a teacher, photography has always been a lingering interest of mine.  I used to think I was pretty good at photography circa age seven when I would find three thousand ways to photograph my favorite thing in the entire world, my puppy.  However, since then I have realized little by little that there are definitely ways that I can improve in my photography skills and moreover, there are a ton of things that I really do not even know about when it comes to taking awesome photos.  I have sincerely always admired talented photographers and really hope to advance, or better yet, create a genuine technique and style of my own this semester.  I would like to imagine that one day I could have an artistic eye for photography as my other artistic abilities have pretty much failed thus far in my short life.

At this point, I find myself drawn towards photos that capture an intriguing emotive quality of anonymous individuals, preferably in surprising or bizarre environments.  This photo by Amy Stein is very humorous to me, yet it hurts my heart in a number of ways as well.  This came from a collection documenting Halloween in Harlem, New York.  This young kid in the dog costume seems to encompass the paradox of this situation...he is the only one in the photo in costume and does not even seem to be too happy about it...which makes me laugh for some reason.  His expression is irreplaceable and the people in the background really enhance the photo for me.  Also, the fact that he's standing in the middle of the street, but when the pedestrian sign is up, also amuses me and seems to make the photo that much better.

For whatever reason my mind seems to wander about the situations of these anonymous people and I think it will remain a subject I stay interested in...we shall see...
